The Penns Grove - Carney's Point area abounds with nearly 285 years of history and nostalgia, Such as the development of it's Schools, Churches and Government services, not to mention the Village's early fame in the fishing and Caviar Industry and the arrival of the DuPont Company which took up residence in 1891Carney's Point.
Recorded History of the area as we find it, remains scattered throughout many small publications such as centennial booklets and individual narratives. Our mission here is to gather and group this information in a manner that will offer some order and ease for those who have an interest in the development of the Penns Neck area.
In grouping this material it becomes immediately apparent that one cannot refer to Penns Grove or Upper Penns Neck without noting the intertwined historic significance of the surrounding communities such as Oldmans, Pole Tavern, Swedesboro, Salem and so on. As we progress with this effort, the presently listed groups on the left may be expanded as new material is discovered and new groups will be created as needed. We look forward to hearing from friends and neighbors who might share their insight and historical knowledge.
While the historical significance of West Jersey is not fully realized in many texts, the area has played an important role throughout the years. It’s location along the banks of the Delaware River made way for shipping ports to provide transportation for agriculture products, Commercial fishing and related supplies broadened the local economy, not to mention the near by ship building business‘. Inland this fertile area provided vast amounts of live stock and farm produce. These resources were even noted and exploited by General Washington and General Howe during the War for Independence.
From Helms Cove to Hancock’s Bridge, our local history is waiting to be re-discovered again and again.
