Ninety-three men were aboard the Major Relbold when it left the Landing for Philadelphia on August 28, 1862. From there another boat took them to Beverly, New Jersey. These men were almost entirely from Upper Penns Neck Township. At Camp Beverly, on August 30, they were sworn into service as Company K, 24th Regiment, New Jersey Infantry, and mustered in on September 16, 1862. Being one of the more notable area units, they proceeded to Washington, and encamped on East Capitol Hill, District of Columbia. They were soon ordered to the front in Virginia and assigned to the First Brigade, Third Division, Second Corps, Army of the Potomac. And as such, they took part in the battle at Fredericksburg, December 13th, 1862; and Chancellorsville, May 2nd and 3rd, 1863.
At this time in history, army units were not re-enforced and served only for a specified period. Hence the high regimental numbers i.e. 24th regiment and so on. Which I believe reached 38. Other area units such as
Company C, 9th New Jersey Infantry saw service much earlier in the Carolina’s under the command of Ambrose Burnside.
The survivors of Company K returned to Beverly and were honorably discharged, June 29, 1863
     Penns Grove’s
